OTHER BIBLE MESSAGES
Have you ever heard of a car made by Ford called the Taurus. In the late 1980's and early 1990's this became a very popular car in the United States. One company, the Roush Racing Company, took a used Ford Taurus and made it into a NASCAR race car. How much do you think this car costs? It is a used Ford Taurus. It doesn't have power windows. In fact, it doesn't have windows at all, it just has a net. It doesn't have power seats; all it has is one uncomfortable bucket seat, bolted down on the floor. It gets five miles per gallon (about 5 kilomoter per liter). It doesn't have air conditioning, but it has plenty of heat. The gas tank takes up most of the trunk.

A nice used Ford Taurus costs about $14,000 (16,000,000 won). But how much do you think this car costs now? $14,000? No. $125,000 (1.5 ock). What makes that car so valuable?" It is because it is not an ordinary Ford Taurus. It was designed and built for a special purpose and that's for NASCAR racing.

In the same way God designed and built you for a special job in the body of Christ. The day you became a Christian the Spirit of God came to live inside of you and gave you supernatural abilities and gifts. That's what makes you valuable. You are not some ordinary Ford Taurus. You are a special, unique design by God.

How many of you know what your spiritual gift is and you are using it to the best of your ability in the body of Christ?

1. WHY DO YOU NEED TO UNDERSTAND YOUR SPIRITUAL GIFT(S)?
At least three times in Scripture the apostle Paul says that there is something he doesn't want us to be ignorant, dumb or stupid about three things. It is good that you came this semester to SYME because we will learn all three of these this term.

The first one if found in 2 Corinthians 2 when he says that we are not to be ignorant of Satan and his ways. We will look at this more next month when we look at the doctrine of Satan. The second is mentioned in 1 Thessalonians 4 where Paul says were are not to be ignorant about prophesy or future events. We will also look at this doctrine next month. Then the apostle says in 1 Corinthians 12 that we are not to be ignorant of spiritual gifts.

The main reason we need to understand about spiritual gifts is because God wants us to.

1 Corinthians
12:1
"Now concerning spiritual gifts brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant."

2. WHAT ARE THE PURPOSES OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS?
There are three main purposes of spiritual gifts. The first is ...

A. To glorify God and exalt Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 4:11 says,

1 Peter 4:11
"If someone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ."

The next purpose of spiritual gifts is ...

B. For the benefit of others. 1 Peter 4:10 says,

1 Peter 4:10
"As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God."

The purpose of all spiritual gifts is for others, not for oneself. The purpose of the gift of prophesy is not to preach to oneself but to preach to others. The purpose of the gift of ministry or helps is not to help yourself but to help others. The purpose of the gift of giving is not to give to yourself but to give to meet the needs of others. The purpose of the gift of mercy is not to be merciful to yourself but to be merciful to others. And here 1 Corinthians 12:7 says that these gifts are given

1 Corinthians 12:7
"to each one for the profit of all."

The third purpose of spiritual gifts is ...

C. To equip the saints and edify the church. Ephesians 4:11-12 says,

Ephesians 4:11-12
"And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.."

1 Corinthians 4:12 says

1 Corinthians 4:12
"For the edification of the church."

3. HOW DOES SOMEONE RECEIVE A SPIRITUAL GIFT(S)?
When you were born you were born with natural abilities or talents. I have three children. Benjamin loves to sit and read books. Anna loves to talk with people. Daniel is more physical and loves to play ball. Each of them are different and born with natural talents and abilities. You also were born with natural talents and abilities.

But when you become a real Christian at that moment you receive the Holy Spirit and you are given supernatural abilities or gifts. Are you a real Christian? You may say, "My Mom's a Christian. Ever since I was born I've always been a Christian. My Dad's a pastor. Matthew 7:21-23 says, "Not everyone who says to Me,' Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father in heaven. Many will say to me in that day,' Lord, Lord, Have we not prophesied (or preached) in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name? ' And then I will declare to them, ' I never knew you; depart from Me..."

Do you remember Nicodemus? He was a religious teacher. In John 3:3-6 "Jesus ... said to him ... ' unless one is born again, He cannot see the kingdom of God.' Nicodemus said ... ' How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?' Jesus answered ... unless one is born of water (physical birth) and of the Spirit (spiritual birth) he cannot enter the kingdom of God."When you become born again the Holy Spirit comes to live inside of you and you are a baby Christian.

In 1 Corinthians 3:1,16 Paul wrote to some baby Christians and he said, "Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?" (Cf. Romans 8:9; 1 Corinthians 6:19). So, to receive a spiritual gift you must be a real Christian.

But how do you get these spiritual gifts? Do you look over a list of spiritual gifts and pick the ones you like best? NO! You don't pick the gift. 1 Corinthians 12:11 says that the Holy Spirit gives the gifts to all believers just as He chooses. No you ... Not me ... but the God who makes no mistakes gives spiritual gifts as He chooses.

Every true Christian has at least one spiritual gift. This is clear from Ephesians 4:7 ("each one"). Paul goes on to tell us that God has decided that no one gets all of the gifts (1 Corinthians 12:29-30). 1 Corinthians 12:18 says, "But now God has set the members, each of them, in the body of Christ just as He pleased" (Ephesians 4:8,11). So different spiritual gifts are given to different people. (Romans 12:6;1 Corinthians 12:4,7,11).
