| 1 Timothy 6:17 |
Then at the end of the week I'd get paid so much for each job I did. But do you know what happened to that money? It was what we called the 10-10-80 plan. At home I had three glass jars. 10% of all the money I received went into the first jar, which was for the Lord. 10% of the money went into the second jar, which I could spend any way I wanted and 80% went into the third jar which was the bank. This was money I was saving for college. So, if I received 5000 won, 500 won went into the first jar, 500 won into the second jar and 4000 won went into the third jar. From the time I was very small until I graduated from high school all the money I received from working was handled this way. The reason my parents did this was to teach me the importance of work and saving.
1. ALWAYS WORK HARD
![]() 2 Thessa-lonians 3:10 |
"If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat." |
Proverbs 20:4 says, "The lazy man will not plow because of winter; He will beg during harvest and have nothing." Ephesians 4:28 says, "Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need." This is God's way. Work hard to have what you need and to be able to share with those who have needs.
2. ALWAYS SAVE SOME
![]() Proverbs 6:6-8 |
"Go to the ant you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise, which, having no captain, overseer or ruler, provides her supplies in the summer, and gathers her food in the harvest." |
Proverbs 21:20 says, "There is desirable treasure, and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man squanders (spends, misuses or wastes) it." The wise man sets aside some of his treasure and some of his oil for the unexpected. Do you know what the fool does? He spends it all. The Living Bible has a good translation of this verse: "The wise man saves for the future, but the foolish man spends whatever he gets."
3. ALWAYS TRUST GOD
Now some people get their money and they want to save it. And they won't spend it for any reason. They just put it in the barn (or bank). They keep it there. They let it increase. This person stores the money in order to have security. They want security. This person is driven by fear. They're afraid something might happen in the future. They might get sick. They might lose their job. They trust in their money more than God to take care of them in the future.
A good example of this was a lady by the name of Hetty Green, who was known as 'America's Greatest Miser.' When she died in 1916, she left$100 million. It is said that Hetty Green dressed in rags and ate cold oatmeal because it was too expensive to heat the water to warm it. She dressed her son in pants so thin that they had to be lined with newspaper to keep warm. Her son severely injured his leg in a snow sledding accident. Hetty refused to pay for medical treatment and waited so long trying to find a free clinic, that his leg had to be amputated (cut off).
Now which one are you? Are you a spender or a storer? If you are a spender God wants you to know things will never give you pleasure. Things will never give fulfillment. Only God can do that. He wants you to trust Him. And if you are a storer. God wants you to trust in Him and not your money for your future. He wants you to learn He is sufficient. He is enough. He wants you to trust Him.
In Luke 12:16-21 Jesus told a parable. It went like this. "The ground of a certain rich man yielded plentifully. And he thought within himself saying, "What shall I do, since I have no room to STORE my crops?" So he said, 'I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build greater, and there I will STORE all my crops and my goods. And I will say to my soul, 'Soul you have many goods LAID UP for many years; take your ease; eat, drink and be merry.' But God said to him, 'Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will these things be which you have provided?" So is he who LAYS UP treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God."
"Then he said to His disciples, 'Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; nor about the body, what you will put on ..." Then in verse 29 he says "And do not seek what you should eat or what you should drink, nor have an anxious mind. For all these things the nations of the world seek after, and your Father knows that you need these things. But seek the kingdom of God, and all these things shall be added to you."
Now what is Jesus saying? Look back at verse 15, "He said to them, saying: 'Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the THINGS he possesses.' If you just store treasure for yourself, you are not rich toward God. So the main point is this: Don't trust in your things for fulfillment, don't trust in your money for security. Trust in God.
1 Timothy 6:17 says,

"Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty (or proud), nor to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. |
